| shielding the filters from direct air, and the term "ram-air" has been used a lot to desribe why the stuble is there, but the terms here are confising you I believe. You can have a ram air effect that increases the local pressure without having the filters exposed directly to the incoming air. The actual problem going on with the stumble of having a filter in the direct stream of air is simply due to turbulence created within the filter by the cross-flow of air through the element (air comes into the frontal side of the filter, passes through the area in the center of the filter, and then is pushed otu the backside of the filter). This creates turbulence at the mouth of the MAS, which causes turbulent flow through the MAS hotwire element. You can have the filters exposed to the direct stream of air and not get this surging issue, however, they have to be mounted in such a way that the pressure is felt equally around the entire filter element, not just one side.
